An excellent site for novices and beginners. Uses USCF formulas for calculating ratings, and periodically they hold tournaments with cash prizes, with cash entry fees of course. Friendly java interface and good chat system.
A site for more advanced players. Uses FIDE rating formula and is a benefit of The Champions Chess Club, which has an array of events ranging from simultaneous exhibitions with GM Kramnik to simple banter games. There is plenty of challenge in the Playing Zone, which can be downloaded on to your computer or played using a java-enabled browser. Titled players can also be found in the Playing Zone. One of the best sites we have found so far.
This site uses a downloadable interface which is consistenly being improved. Uses its own rating system and allows members to participate in a variety of things. Events include banter games, lectures, and an exclusive game that we can't find anywhere else: Predict-A-Move, where you compete against other players by guessing the mystery players' next move. Cash prizes are given for Predict-A-Move, and you can find players from all over the world. A very fun and interesting site.
One of the best correspondence gaming sites on the internet. Contains many interesting variations of chess along with many other popular board games. Holds monthly tournaments for all games at a variety of timers and playing levels.
